Deservedly, Greenfield is also one of the most downloaded Minecraft maps, with over 1.1 million downloads recorded on. The airport alone took two-and-a-half years to build! What makes Greenfield truly special is each of the over 8000 individual buildings has substantial detail, with interiors fully explorable. The staff team then makes sure each building is up to scratch via painstaking quality checks. You control a stickman who has fallen into the middle of a large city. After road networks are designed and constructed, the staff team decides which buildings an area should have, gradually narrowing the detail down at an individual plot level. When it comes to survival Minecraft maps, there arent many that do it better. A staff team of 10 people make overarching decisions, greenlight new builders and plan out additions to the map. Greenfield was founded by Minecraft builder THEJESTR in August 2011, but in the 11 years since over 500 builders, including software engineers and architecture students, helped out. In a significant update issued in October 2022, the size of the city doubled with the addition of a life-size airport, nearly 3000 new buildings, seven new districts and even an enormous retirement facility. Its creators estimate the size of the built map (excluding water) to be 38 square kilometres.
The in-progress map has seen over 500 million blocks placed so far, with each in-game block equating to one cubic metre. The largest realistic city in Minecraft (2011, Mojang) is Greenfield, a sprawling city inspired by Los Angeles built to a 1:1 scale.
